PROGRAMME | Children’s Museum Festival: Birthday Party!

In 2026, the traditional Children’s Museum Festival will be celebrated in a festive spirit as Exhibition Centre WeeGee and its museums turn 20, and the Museum Leikki celebrates its 30th anniversary. Everyone is invited to join the party!

The Children’s Museum Festival is organised by EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Exhibition Centre WeeGee, KAMU Espoo City Museum, and Leikki – the Museum of Play, in collaboration with the Espoo School of Art and Espoo’s library and culture bus Välkky.

Pikku Papu Orchestra

For 13 years, Pikku Papu Orchestra has been one of Finland’s leading children’s music orchestras, performing to sold-out venues. Their songs are created together with poet-illustrator Liisa Kallio. Step into a captivating concert full of singing, dancing, and wonder for the whole family!

Mimi and Kuku
Sat–Sun at 10:30, 13:00 & 15:30 (Museum Leikki)

Join a lively adventure where everyone becomes the hero of the show! Known from TV, musician Mimi and the goofy clown-lion Kuku lead a joyful, active performance with dancing, puppet theatre, bubble baths, tasks, lion training—and a pinch of birthday magic.

 

Chase of the Tasty Tone
Sat at 13 & 14, Sun at 11:30 & 12:30 (Exhibition Centre WeeGee)

Let’s go on a musical adventure! Viivi, Tero, Ayla and Kasheshi lead an expedition to find the perfect shared sound. The audience is invited to join in various ways. Together we’ll bake a birthday cake of melodies, where tunes come alive like storybook characters—a joyful experience leaving you smiling and humming!

Let’s baila! Explore dance cultures from Finland, Brazil and Tanzania in a relaxed workshop filled with rhythm, togetherness and low-threshold fun.

Birthday Experience Simulator / Theatre ILMI Ö

Happy birthday—to you! Sit down and enjoy a tailor-made birthday celebration in just one minute. Choose from a menu featuring fishing-for-prizes, singing, or even a festive speech. Even if you don’t understand the language, the fun is universal—hip hip hooray! Between performances, you can leave your own birthday wishes in your own language.

 

Circus World and Circus Surprise Performances /
Espoo Circus and Theatre School Esko

Come celebrate your birthday in the colourful world of circus, full of tricks and playful activities. Circus World features a fun obstacle course where everyone can let loose and test their agility. What new juggling and balancing tricks will you learn at the circus equipment stations?

Students from Esko’s performance group will showcase their impressive skills in their Circus Surprise shows. They will perform in the same space on Saturday at 12:30, 14:30 and 15:30, and on Sunday at 13:00, 14:30 and 16:00. Come and marvel at acrobatics, daring chair pyramids and joyful circus fun!

 

Ama Kyei: Whisper of Water

Experience an interactive dance piece inspired by the messages of water, rooted in Ghanaian storytelling traditions where magic and dance intertwine.

Karaoke with the Karaoke Emperor!

Hosted by Juha Heikkinen, the legendary Karaoke Emperor. Sing classics in many languages—or perhaps a birthday song to match the theme? Come and experience karaoke led by a legendary karaoke master — and sing your favourite tune in honour of the festival!

 

Multicultural Market
Sat–Sun 11–17

Meet local associations Nicehearts ry (only on Saturday), Familia ry and Mokulat ry! Try two art workshops – Lantern of Togetherness and Festive Beads – with guidance available in English, Chinese, Turkish and Tagalog. Let the workshops sweep you into a world of fun and creativity!

Lantern of Togetherness: Create a paper lantern decorated with recycled materials. Workshop will be lead by artist duo “joka-asia”, Lù Chén ja Burak Türköz.
Languages: English, Chinese and Turkish.

Festive Beads: Make paper beads from recycled paper and create your own festive jewellery. Workshop will be lead by Donna Roca
Languages: English and Tagalog.

 

Birthday Cake Workshop

Design and build your own imaginative birthday cake made from paper, cardboard and imaginative materials. Join us in creating the festive treat of your dreams, where imagination takes centre stage!

The Tree of Wishes

Celebrate around a magical birthday tree inhabited by creatures who may not speak your language. How will you leave them your wish – perhaps without words?

To celebrate the birthday, a variety of gift packages have been hidden around the WeeGee. How many can you find? Once you’ve discovered all of them, you can collect your prize from the guide.

 

The Best Gift

Today everyone has a birthday, so let’s take a birthday photo! Capture a portrait of yourself or your birthday‑celebrating child at the photo spot. Peek inside a gift box or pose with number balloons.

Delicatessen serves a selection of tasty treats: there will be birthday cake, of course, as well as machines for cotton‑candy and popcorn!

If the festival buzz leaves you needing a break, you’ll find a small rest area on the second floor of the WeeGee Exhibition Centre, where you can recharge while waiting for the next part of the programme.

Sparkling party fairy, superhero, or magical guest? Style yourself with playful theatre costumes and capture your festive look at the photo booth.

Sushi Hunt

Oishii! In Japanese culture, sushi belongs on the festive table. Can you find the tasty treats hidden around Leikki – the Museum of Play?

 

Henna Tattoo Point

Decorate yourself with a small natural henna tattoo and learn about the ancient tradition behind the art form.

 

Wheel of Fortune

Leikki – the Museum of Play’s own mascot, Comfort Bear, greets visitors with hugs and photo opportunities.
