Björn Weckström

Björn Weckström, 2026 © Ari Karttunen / EMMA

Björn Weckström (b. 1935, Helsinki) is a Finnish jewellery artist and sculptor. He is known as a pioneer of modern jewellery art who brought Finnish jewellery design to international prominence.

Trained as a goldsmith, Weckström has explored the expressive possibilities of material and form throughout his distinguished career, both in visual art and jewellery design. He approaches jewellery as miniature sculpture. The organic and powerful visual language of his jewellery extends to his larger-scale sculptures, which also include figurative works.

Weckström has created sculptures in a wide range of materials, including acrylic, marble, glass and bronze. His works are inspired by themes drawn from myths and classical narratives, as well as reflections on the future of humankind.

Artist's Home Villa Weckström

Villa Weckström © Ari Karttunen / EMMA

Villa Weckström is a modern artist’s home located in the seaside district of Soukanniemi in Espoo, where Björn Weckström has lived and worked for nearly 30 years. Over the decades, his jewellery, bronze sculptures, glass art, furniture and paintings have become part of everyday life at the villa and its surrounding archipelago landscape.

The guided tour opens up an entirely new way to experience the life’s work of the internationally renowned jewellery artist and sculptor. On display are works by Weckström spanning from the 1950s to the 2020s. A visit to the artist’s home sheds light on his experimental approach to materials, forms and techniques.

This marks the first time EMMA has extended its activities to an artist’s home. The unique initiative forms part of the museum’s 20th anniversary programme and highlights EMMA’s role in strengthening the dialogue between art and design.
