We will announce upcoming infos on the page in Finnish.
EMMA's services in support of the curriculum
EMMA’s educational programme supports the school curriculum and the goals of transversal competence. Art is excellent for phenomenon-based learning that connects and crosses subject boundaries.
As a learning environment, EMMA offers versatile opportunities to deepen and supplement what has been learned in school and early childhood education. The collections and exhibitions widely support teaching that combines different subjects and multidisciplinary learning modules.
Below we explain in more detail what the goals of broad competence mean in EMMA’s art museum environment.
You can always make wishes about the content of the tour or tell us what topics you are currently covering at school. Write these in the additional information section on the booking form – we will always try to take your wishes into account where possible. When making a reservation, we hope that you mention any special needs that you might have. We take students who need special support into account in our services.
All our services are available in plain Finnish.
You can also book a tour for preparatory classes and those studying Finnish. In addition to plain Finnish, we use picture cards to support understanding of art and strengthening one’s own expression.
All EMMA’s guided tours are interactive, functional and participatory.
We examine art techniques and art history in a variety of ways and practice multiliteracy skills, self-expression, and emotional, empathy and interaction skills. During a museum visit, we also get to know the museum as the home of art.
Art can be many things!
Transversal competences at EMMA
1. Thinking and learning to learn (L1)
- Art invites us to think and discover.
- We engage with the multidisciplinary nature of art through experiential and hands-on activities. Learning is built on observations and interaction within the group.
- We learn the basics of artistic expression.
- A museum visit initiates a learning process where insights gained from art connect with personal experiences and other acquired knowledge.
2. Cultural competence, interaction and self-expression (L2)
- We relate to the themes of artworks and the thoughts of artists through empathy and emotional skills, which we practice through discussion and interactive exercises.
- We learn to express our opinions and emotions evoked by art, while also learning to respect different perspectives – in art, there are no right answers.
- We explore the museum as a memory institution and a source of cultural capital.
3. Taking care of oneself and managing daily life(L3)
- We practice navigating a new learning environment and interacting within a group and with an unfamiliar adult.
- Art offers tools for calming the mind and supporting mental well-being.
- Through repeated visits, the museum becomes a familiar, comfortable, and approachable place.
4. Multiliteracy (L4)
- We learn about basic art concepts, forms, styles, and works from different eras. These help us explore art history and the role of art in representing phenomena.
- We practice combining different types of information into personal understanding of art. Information can be verbal, visual, auditory, numerical, or kinesthetic – or combinations of these. Artworks support diverse learning styles.
- During museum visits, we learn about relationships between meanings. Contemporary art is part of a cultural-historical continuum. Given and existing knowledge connects with our own thoughts, experiences, and emotions.
- Multimedia art activates thinking and supports transversal understanding.
- As a spatial and changing environment, the museum enables learning experiences that are not possible in a traditional classroom.
5. ICT competence (L5)
- We develop digital literacy through multimedia artworks and installations.
6. Working life competence and entrepreneurship (L6)
7. Participation, involvement and building a sustainable future (L7)
- We encourage active participation and constructive dialogue in interpreting art.
- We understand the potential of art to influence. We learn about responsibility, diversity, and sustainability through both the themes and techniques of art.
- We explore the meanings of art and its connections to other areas of life.
- We learn about the museum as an institution and its role in preserving and communicating cultural heritage. Art and culture are part of communication and influence in society.
