EMMA joins new collaboration: Applications open for residency in Tapiola Studio House
The Finnish Artists’ Studio Foundation of the Artists Association of Finland is launching a new studio apartment programme at the Tapiola Studio House together with the City of Espoo and EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art. Early-career artists may apply for a three-year residency for 2026–2028 until 12 October, 2025.
Tapiola Studio House is a unique rowhouse of ten studio apartments designed by architect Aulis Blomstedt in 1955. The building is located at Nallenpolku 1, Espoo.
One artist will be selected to live and work in the studio apartment for a fixed term of three years. The programme is intended for professional visual artists at the beginning of their careers. Eligible applicants are artists currently living and working in Finland who graduated or began their professional practice no more than five years ago, or who are soon completing their professional art studies.
Through the programme, the Finnish Artists’ Studio Foundation, the City of Espoo, and EMMA aim to support early-career visual artists while also making artistic work more visible to the public at the Tapiola Studio House. The selected artist is expected to participate annually in collaborative activities with EMMA’s audience engagement team, such as artist talks, open studios, and other public events. These activities will be compensated in accordance with professional fee recommendations. The artist may also be invited to act as an expert for the City of Espoo in various development projects, to be agreed upon together, with additional fees paid.
The subsidized monthly rent for the resident is €500, made possible through the City of Espoo’s support. The residency period begins between 1 December, 2025, and 15 January, 2026, and ends on 31 December, 2028.
How to apply
Application instructions are available in Finnish on the Finnish Artists’ Studio Foundation’s website. The deadline for applications is Sunday, 12 October, 2025, at 23:59. Artistic merit will be the primary selection criterion. In addition, applicants’ willingness and ability to share their artistic process with the public and collaborate with partners will be considered.
Applicants will be notified of the decision by the end of October 2025. The selected artist will sign a lease agreement, a collaboration agreement concerning public engagement with EMMA, and a separate agreement with the City of Espoo.
