Ida Alanen Trio is one of the most exciting Finnish jazz groups of the moment. The trio is led by pianist-composer Ida Alanen, who was born in Helsinki. Now based in Amsterdam, Alanen recently graduated with a Master’s degree in music from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where she studied under Harmen Fraanje among others. Bassist Jonathan Bäckström and drummer Benjamin Nylund are also known as a rhythm section from the Jonathan Bäckström Quartet. All three are rising talents and strongly individual voices in the jazz scene.

The trio’s repertoire consists mainly of Alanen’s compositions, which the group has been working on intensively in recent years. Alanen’s music draws inspiration from visual forms, organic textures, and dream imagery. Her distinctive style as a composer and improviser reflects influences from various musical traditions, including minimalism, 20th-century composers, and folk music. The trio shares a seamless musical connection, effortlessly moving between carefully orchestrated compositions and free improvisation.

The club series produced in collaboration by April Jazz Club, Exhibition Centre WeeGee and EMMA brings live music into the museum setting. On every Friday EMMA has free entry from 3 pm onward. Admission to the concerts is free.
