Winter at EMMA: Art, Design and Architecture Surrounded by Snowy Woodlands
Looking for inspiring things to do in the Helsinki metropolitan area this winter? Just a few metro stops from the city centre, EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art offers a refreshing mix of contemporary art, Finnish design, and modern architecture in a uniquely atmospheric setting.
Surrounded by the snowy woodlands of Tapiola, EMMA invites visitors to explore changing exhibitions, design classics, and thought-provoking installations inside the iconic WeeGee Exhibition Centre, a striking 1960s concrete building designed by architect Aarno Ruusuvuori. The museum’s spacious galleries and panoramic windows create a serene connection between art and nature, especially during Finland’s winter months.
As Finland’s largest art museum, EMMA provides engaging experiences for visitors of all ages. Families, art lovers, and design enthusiasts alike will discover something new each season, whether it is contemporary Finnish art, international exhibitions, or simply a peaceful cultural escape near Helsinki.
Exhibitions, Guided Tours and Events for All Ages
This winter, EMMA presents in total of seven exhibitions, all included in one admission ticket. Latest addition is Chiming Forest by Finnish artist Antti Laitinen, that transforms the gallery space into a forest of sound and movement. The kinetic installation is part of InCollection series by EMMA and Saastamoinen Foundation and encourages visitors to reflect the relationship between humans and nature.
Textile art enthusiasts are especially in for a treat. A solo exhibition by Karin Hellman, a pioneer of Finnish collage art, showcases her colorful and distinctive works. In the adjacent exhibition space, you’ll find material-based art in the spirit of the Italian-born Arte Povera movement, highlighting works by international female artists from modernism to today. Draped – Art of Printed Fabric exhibition celebrates the art of printed fabrics in a vibrant display. Spot nostalgic patterns or discover your new favorites!
EMMA’s permanent collection exhibitions are a must for fans of Finnish design, modern and contemporary art. Collection Kakkonen features an exceptional collection and a true design treasure trove consisting of Finnish glass, ceramics and ryijy tapestries by businessman Kyösti Kakkonen. Dialogues exhibition from the Saastamoinen Foundation Collection, brings together Finnish and international contemporary art and modernism.
