EMMA Talks | Textiles and organic materials in art
To celebrate the opening of the Karin Hellman and Arte Povera exhibitions, we are hosting a discussion on themes that connect the two shows. The experts discussing art materials and their meanings are Leontine Coelewij, curator and conservator at the Stedelijk Museum, and Riikka Niemelä, researcher of contemporary art at the University of Turku. The talk will be moderated by Pilvi Kalhama, director of EMMA.
Time will be set aside for questions from the audience.
The discussion will be in English. Finnish written interpretation and induction loop technology will be provided.
Speakers
Leontine Coelewij is a curator and conservator at the Stedelijk Museum. She has studied how artists use materials in their work and curated a major retrospective of Ana Lupas’s art at the Stedelijk. Ana Lupas’s works are also featured in the Arte Povera – A New Chapter exhibition.
Riikka Niemelä, PhD, is a researcher in contemporary art history at the University of Turku. Her research focuses on experimental methods in the work of women artists in particular. Niemelä has contributed an essay to the Karin Hellman exhibition publication, due out in June.
Pilvi Kalhama is EMMA’s Director and one of the curators of Arte Povera – A New Chapter. The theme of materiality that links the two exhibitions ties in with Kalhama’s doctoral research, which examines the interaction between museums and art, particularly in relation to the circulation of materials.
