Online on EMMA Zone: Video recording of Tschabalala Self’s Sounding Board performance
Tschabalala Self’s first-ever performance piece, Sounding Board (2021), is like a painting brought to life, exploring emotional communication, gender roles, and power play in intimate relationships. The dialogue between the male and female characters ranges from absurd to melodramatic, accompanied by a band performing Boney M covers like a Greek chorus. The set and the costumes designed by Self follow the aesthetic of her paintings. Sounding Board was commissioned for the 2021 Performa Biennial in New York and was first performed in the amphitheatre at Jackie Robinson Park in Harlem.
The recording of the performance can be watched on EMMA Zone from Friday to Sunday, 15–17 November. The video is available around the clock (12am–12pm, UTC+2).
The video is in English, with subtitles in both Finnish and English.
