Weegee Reads | Panel discussion & silent book club
WeeGee Reads is here again! The theme of September’s WeeGee Reads is Who speaks and in whose voice? The theme is inspired by both the event space, EMMA’s exhibition Tschabalala Self: Around the Way and R. F. Kuang’s book Yellowface. There is a panel discussion (in Finnish) on the book, and the participants are Aracelis Correa and Téri Zambrano from POC-lukupiiri ry and bookstagrammer and book influencer Linnea Peurakoski. The panel is moderated by author and bookstagrammer Vehka Kurjenmiekka. Other parts of the event, on top of the panel discussion, are silent book club and a wrap-up discussion.
Yellowface, soon to be published in Finnish by Teos (translated by Helene Bützow) is a story about a white person who steals the voice of her Chinese American friend. June Hayward is a twenty-something student whose dreams of becoming an author don’t seem to take flight. When her talented co-student she admires (and hates at the same time) Athena Liu dies in the middle of a get-together, June can’t resist temptation: she steals the manuscript of her Chinese American friend and offers it up for publishing as her own work.

What is a silent book club?
The silent book club is an event concept for book lovers who want to read in peace but still together. The concept is simple: gather, open a book, and immerse yourself in it for an agreed-upon time. WeeGee Reads events revolve around a loose theme, and we encourage participants to bring a book that fits the theme. This is entirely voluntary; you can read whatever you want. After reading, there will be a discussion about what has been read.
WeeGee Reads is organized in collaboration with Exhibition Centre Weegee, publishing house Teos and EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art. Take a book related to the theme with you, head to Exhibition Centre WeeGee and come enjoy literature in the middle of art museum!
Included in the museum entrance fee (20/10€, free entry for under 18-year-olds). We accept the Museum Card.
