The retrospective exhibition of Howard Smith (1928–2021) presents the versatile career of a well-loved and distinctive artist. The exhibition pays tribute to his open-minded visual expression and his influence on the Finnish art and design scene.

Originally from New Jersey, Smith became known for his curious approach to art. His extensive career resembled a continuous journey of exploration into the possibilities of different materials, forms and techniques. Smith worked across a wide range of media, including ceramics, textile art, sculpture, papercut, collage and drawing. In addition, his designs extended into urban spaces through numerous public artworks. Alongside his art, Smith designed fabrics for Vallila and ceramics for Arabia. His much-loved design classics have found their way into many Finnish homes and everyday life.

The long-awaited solo exhibition of Howard Smith is part of EMMA’s series highlighting both the classics of modernism and its reformers. It celebrates an artist whose contribution to Finnish art and design has been significant, while also emphasising the importance of multiculturalism as part of Finland’s art history. Smith stands out as a rare example of an African American artist who played a central role in shaping Finland’s visual culture.
