Howard Smith (1928–2021) was a US-born artist known for his bold and vibrant visual language, who came to Finland in the 1960s. What was intended as a short visit turned into a decision to stay and build a career that would last for decades.

The Howard Smith exhibition presents works by the beloved artist from the 1960s through to the 2000s as part of EMMA’s series showcasing modernist classics. The show is a tribute to Smith’s open-minded art and his significance in the history of Finnish art and design. Smith is a rare example of an African American artist who had a major impact on the development of Finnish visual culture.

Smith’s long career was a constant exploration of materials, forms and techniques. He worked in ceramics, textiles, sculpture, paper cutting, collage and drawing. He also collaborated with a number of architects and designed works of art for urban spaces.

Alongside fine art, Smith designed fabrics for the interior design and textile company Vallila and ceramics for the Finnish ceramics and porcelain brand Arabia. The Finnish public is, in fact, familiar with Howard Smith’s visual idiom primarily through his design patterns, which can be found in many Finnish homes and in everyday life.

The exhibition also features commissioned works by contemporary artist Sasha Huber and fashion designer Ervin Latimer.
