Katarina Reuter: Black Crow Blues

Katarina Reuter (b. 1964) is the winner of the 2022 Fine Arts Academy of Finland Prize. As part of the award, EMMA will host her solo exhibition in autumn 2023, featuring her highly detailed, skilfully executed paintings themed around the artist’s interest in nature and the natural sciences.

Reuter is known for her nuanced depictions of intimate natural settings and miniature creatures rendered in exquisitely delicate brushstrokes. The exhibition invites us to contemplate the micro-worlds concealed within nature’s great biodiversity. Intimate in scale, Reuter’s paintings fuel the imagination with their rich detailing and many layers of meaning. Her landscapes and nature scenes appear to be tranquil, yet an ominous shadow hangs over their serenity. Reuter graduated from the Fine Arts Academy in 1988. She is based in the rural region of Raasepori, living amid the natural scenery she captures in her paintings.

The Fine Arts Academy of Finland Prize is awarded every second year to an internationally noted Finnish artist at their creative peak. The award also includes an exhibition catalogue.

EMMA has been a partner in the award since its inception in 2013. The previous winners featured in prize exhibitions at EMMA are Aaron Heino, Tuomas A. Laitinen, Camilla Vuorenmaa and Outi Pieski. The City of Espoo supports the award in the hope of bringing visibility to interesting, relevant contemporary artists in Espoo and at EMMA.
