EMMA’s annual Children’s Museum Festival will be held on March 18 and 19. This year’s festival will spread from WeeGee, EMMA and KAMU Espoo City Museum to the Leikki Museum of Play and the Finnish Museum of Horology and Jewellery Kruunu across the yard, offering a packed line-up of activities, music and fun things to do all around the festival area. 

During the school winter holidays in February, EMMA will host a special Art Break week, featuring a programme of events put together by art education students from Aalto University. Every day will be different, so you’re welcome to drop in on the days you want or come along for the whole week! 

Visitors with infants under one year of age are invited to explore the exhibitions at our Art Play for Babies event held monthly in February, March and April. Our popular Saturday workshops will resume in February: check out the workshop themes here. 

Music, outdoor activities and art along the subway stations 

The April Jazz Festival brings live music to WeeGee and EMMA in three Friday concerts to be organized this spring. Later in spring, music lovers will have the chance to enjoy live oboe music while visiting the exhibitions. 

In May, join us for a ‘jogging tour’ of public art in the vicinity of the museum. Our Art Run tours will be hosted by wellbeing coach Rani Saarinen, also known for EMMA’s Feel the Art tours. On Museum Day, May 18, EMMA and KAMU Espoo City Museum will jointly organize a Culture Tour introducing the art and history of the new subway stations on the westbound metro line.

Our spring season opens with Pilvi Takala’s video installation fresh from Venice Biennale 

EMMA’s spring exhibition programme kicks off in February with Pilvi Takala’s Close Watch (2022), which premiered last spring in the Finnish Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale. The multi-channel video installation takes a critical look at how power is wielded in public spaces by the private security industry. The exhibition will be accompanied by an indepth public programme. A series of EMMA Talks devised by the artist will extend discussions the work has generated.

Design, metamorphosis and interdisciplinary creations 

The Yrjö Kukkapuro – Magic Room exhibition opening in March celebrates the long career and colourful, imaginative work of designer Yrjö Kukkapuro. Magic Room pairs his iconic designs with his beloved, long-term source of inspiration: art. Yrjö Kukkapuro – Magic Room further expands EMMA’s design offering, rounding our two other design-focused shows: Collection Kakkonen, a long-term exhibit that opened last year presenting Finnish glass and ceramic art, and the Form exhibition showcasing the sculptural character of Tapio Wirkkala’s designs. 

In spring we will be hosting expert tours of Magic Room and Form, where you can learn more about how the exhibitions came together. Also don’t miss our new Design at EMMA guided tours of selected highlights from our current design offering. 

Metamorphosis is an interdisciplinary exhibition created uniquely for EMMA’s space by artist Hannaleena Heiska and dancer-choreographer Minna Tervamäki. The exhibition fuses film, painting and dance into a seamless creation, but an integral element of surprise is added by the live performances, which continually transform the space. The performance schedule will be announced later in spring.
