Espoo Museum of Modern Art

In February 2020 a piece by Young Artist of the Year 2019 Nastja Säde Rönkkö called for those yet to be (2016–2018) will be on display. The work is a series of video performances investigating emotions in relation to ecological destruction.

The exhibition program of 2020 is opened by visual artist Tacita Dean (b. 1965), currently one of the world’s most significant contemporary artists.

Hans Rosenström's In Dependent Structures is a spatial audio work that takes the listener to the frontiers of perception.

The artist duo's work is on display as part of the Touch exhibition. Faz que Vai is a video essay consisting of four parts. In each part, a different dancer interprets a traditional Brazilian Carnival dance, Frevo. Duration: 12 minutes.

Sari Palosaari’s new artwork On The Cusp of The Still Untitled (2020) consists of natural stones, which are prepared so as to seem that they have split on their own accord. Palosaari's installation is shown in the SEB lobby area, Eteläesplanadi 18, Helsinki.

Sky of Time is an exhibition featuring the world-famous Japanese artist Tatsuo Miyajima. The show marks the continuation of a new form of collaboration between EMMA and the Saastamoinen Foundation. Every year, a new work will be commissioned for the Foundation’s collections from a topically relevant contemporary artist.

Textile holds emotions and stories. Interwoven is an exhibition exploring ties between art and textile design, including a glimpse of bold new materials used by experimental designers.

Adel Abidin’s video installation, Michael, is a sarcastic exploration of our time, which revolves around the glorification of money and fame.

Michael Jackson: On the Wall exhibition tour ends at EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition consists of almost 100 artworks exploring how Michael Jackson has inspired some of the leading names in contemporary art.

The animation Other Faces by William Kentridge is on display in the media space of the Touch exhibition. Kentridge comments on social injustice in his art and draws on the violent history of South Africa and reflections on it today. Duration 9:35 min.

Mika Helin’s spatial artwork Double Shadow depicts an encounter between the human-built environment and nature. His works are often unique pieces, demolished after an exhibition. Helin's installation is shown as part of SEB's and EMMA’s series of new collection works that will be presented for the first time in the SEB lobby area.

Players is a film about a group of friends who play online poker professionally. The rules that govern the everyday life in their community follow the logic of the game. All the six characters are portrayed by Takala.

The Men Who Fell from Earth is a group exhibition featuring three leading contemporary painters of our time: Jonathan Meese, Daniel Richter and Tal R.

Juhana Moisander’s videoinstallation Ethology of a Man (2019) examines models of human group behaviour that repeat themselves from one historical era to another. The video installation was created in cooperation with a contact improvisation group and features a strong soundscape. With their movements, the performers depict different scenes that show dynamics of power, such as a crowd in a frenzied ecstasy and the rise and fall of leaders.

Antti Kytömäki’s installation is shown as part of SEB's and EMMA’s series of new collection works that will be presented for the first time in the SEB lobby area. Entry is free of charge!

Shot on 35 mm film, Jonna Kina's five-minute work is a documentary portrait of two Foley artists recreating sound effects for the famous shower scene in Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960). The work investigates how sounds are produced for cinematic purposes and what happens when the conventions of film are deconstructed.

A documentary on Rut Bryk produced by EMMA will premiere on 2 April. It is shown in the exhibition space in the middle of the Bryk & Wirkkala Visible Storage. Artist Maaria Wirkkala's work Mosaics of the Mind is displayed until April 14th alongside the documentary.

Alicja Kwade, a contemporary artist widely celebrated in recent international art biennials, makes her Finnish debut with her solo show Trans-For-Men. The exhibition, that is built around a commission by the Saastamoinen Foundation, sheds light on the artist’s current practice.

Throughout history, the future has been a topic of enduring fascinating among architects, planners, designers and artists. Futuromania – Designing Future Living presents a selection of utopian designs by Finnish visionaries from the 1950s and 1960s.

Parent Matter is an installation by Teemu Lehmusruusu examining the impact of human actions and geological forces on the Earth’s natural materials. The piece looks at the invisible life that exists deep within the soil, which is essential to the survival of life above ground. The installation is part of a new series of works exhibited as a joint project between SEB and EMMA. Free entry!

Fellman’s Field is a documentary film by Kaisa Salmi commenting on the Finnish Civil War of 1918. The film was shot as part of Fellman’s Field – Living Monument of 22 000 People, a large-scale participatory performance organized by Salmi in the Finnish town of Lahti in April 2013.

No Ordinary Moments is an exhibition featuring a curated pick of Finnish and international works from EMMA’s collection. The exhibition reflects on the different layers of the visible and imaginary worlds and the surrounding reality that we share in complex ways.

Outi Pieski's exhibition Čuolmmadit is the artist’s first extensive solo exhibition. The exhibition title refers to a monumental textile installation of hand-woven knots which features in the exhibition alongside paintings and photographs.

Kate McIntosh's Worktable is an ongoing, living installation and one of the best-known participatory works by Kate McIntosh. Visitors receive safety goggles and a hammer – let the work begin!

Elina Vainio is an Helsinki based artist whose works discuss themes that spring from the relationship between nature, the material environment and man. Vainio’s works challenge us to think of the consequences of our actions and what we are leaving behind for the future generations.

Over the years, the Futuro has captured the imagination of artists, designers and the public at large all around the world. To celebrate the jubilee year, artist and filmmaker Mika Taanila has been invited to create a new artwork based on the Futuro. The result is Plastic Heart, a multi-channel sound installation paying homage to the Futuro.

Mirrors of the Mind is a comprehensive retrospective presenting the work of Meret Oppenheim (1913 Berlin - 1985 Basel) who pushed Surrealism in new directions. Meret Oppenheim ranks among the most intriguing and influential exponents of Surrealism. Her life and work continue to hold relevance today through playful intellectualism, experimentalism, and feminism.

Danish artist John Kørner has transformed EMMA’s gallery space into a three-dimensional painting into which the visitor can enter. Kørner’s art touches upon global topics such as migration and inequality to more personal themes such as identity, relationships and happiness.

STILL / LIFE – Tapio Wirkkala Retrospective is the first changing exhibition in Aukio, the space for alternating exhibitions, dedicated to Rut Bryk’s and Tapio Wirkkala’s life’s work and design.

The fall season of Huone features three media art works from the Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection that have been voted in by the public. The artworks are Hannaleena Heiska: Ridestar, Santeri Tuori: Metsä (vehmas 1) and Shirin Neshat: Possessed.
